Wayne and Coleen Rooney celebrate the birth of their first child, son Kai Wayne Wayne and Coleen Rooney are celebrating the birth of their first child. The Manchester United and England star, 24, was at his wife’s side as she gave birth at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital early this afternoon. England footballer Wayne Rooney's wife Coleen today gave birth at Liverpool Women's Hospital to a baby boy they have named Kai Wayne Rooney, a spokesman for the couple said. Kai, is of Welsh, Scandinavian and Greek origin, and means keeper of the keys. It is also an Hawaian name, meaning 'the sea'. While Wayne is of Old English origin and means simply, Wagon builder or driver.
The couple arrived at the hospital just after 10pm on Sunday night. Coleen remained at the hospital overnight while Wayne grabbed a few hours sleep in a nearby fathers’ room. It is believed that doctors then decided to induce the baby, which had been due on October 24 – and so was nine days late. Col was checked into the delivery room and gave birth to a baby boy at 13.45pm
Wayne held his wife's hand throughout the delivery period and was in tears when Col handed over the baby.
A source told the Daily Mail: 'Wayne was a star with Coleen. He didn't leave her side from the moment she came into the hospital.
'When Col gave birth, Wayne's eyes welled up. As soon as he was handed the baby the tears began. 'He was over the moon and was saying "I can't believe it.'"
Rooney looks set to miss United's Champions League clash with CSKA Moscow tomorrow night to be with his wife and child. Coleen is expected to return home from the hospital tomorrow evening. The family of both Wayne and Coleen were in the hospital and Wayne's brother Stephen and cousin Clare arrived at the hospital an hour after birth clutching flowers. This morning, Coleen's mother Colette McLoughlin and her brother Joe arrived at the hospital, to be on hand and offer support. The first indication the baby was on the way came when it emerged Wayne had missed training with his Manchester United colleagues to be with his wife at the birth. Coleen's decision to snub private healthcare delighted
The TV presenter, 23 - worth £8 million in her own right - recently made a documentary featuring her adopted sister Rosie, who suffers from Rett Syndrome, to raise funds for NHS hospices. Coleen's choice of the hospital, just six miles from where she grew up at Croxteth, shows she has kept her feet firmly on the ground, and is a marked contrast to many other footballers’ wives who have chosen to give birth at private clinics. Victoria Beckham had her and David’s first two Brooklyn and Romeo at London's Portland Hospital, which was also chosen by Jamie Redknapp's wife Louise for the births of their two children. The hospital was also where Frank Lampard's former partner Elen Rives had her two girls. However Alex Curran and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard's two daughters were born on the NHS at the same hospital chosen by Coleen which has a maximum three-star rating from the Healthcare Commission. Coleen – who has been preparing her and Wayne’s £3.5 million mansion in Prestbury, Cheshire ahead of the big day - has been thrilled at the prospect of becoming a mother, saying recently: “Because you’re getting bigger, you can’t wait to meet the baby.” She is also planning her own range of baby clothing.
Wayne and Coleen married in Portofino, Italy in June last year. The couple were paid £2.5 million by OK! magazine for the exclusive wedding rights. It was announced in April that they were expecting their first child – but they have vowed not to sell the rights to the first pictures of the baby, despite being offered £1 million. The relationship even survived revelations in 2004 that Rooney had visited prostitutes in Liverpool when he and Coleen were first dating at as teenagers but before they had become engaged. At the time, he confessed: “Foolish as it now seems I did on occasion visit massage parlours and prostitutes. "I now regret it deeply and hope people may understand that it was the sort of mistake you make when you are young and stupid. "It was at a time when I was very young and immature and before I had settled down with Coleen." Coleen, 23, was given two misopostrol pills to help along with the delivery. Col was checked into the delivery room and gave birth to a baby boy at 12.45. Wayne Rooney held his wife's hand throughout the delivery period and was in tears when Col handed over the baby. An inside source said: "Wayne was a star with Coleen. "He didn't leave her side from the moment she came into the hospital. "When Col gave birth, Wayne's eyes welled up. "As soon as he was handed the baby the tears began. "He was over the moon and was saying "I can't believe it.'"
